Over the years, Nigeria’s most prestigious music award, The Headies has strived for excellence in building the award on true values of integrity, transparency and responsibility. We have worked hard to reward artistic ingenuity since day one and also educating the teaming fans of the award, the public and the entertainment industry about the rules of the awards and the criteria for nominations in each category. Often times, we realize that the fans, people in the industry and the media are misled; because they are in a hurry to get by with the nominees list and they neglect reading between the lines, not caring about the rules of nominations and criteria.
Hence, it is important to set the record straight and continue to enlighten.
Next Rated for example are officially unreleased artiste in the year under review. This means, no matter how popular your song may be, how many hit singles or how many beautiful music videos you may have, if you have not recorded and released an official album, you are still eligible to be nominated for that category. In the same vein, no matter when you start your career, as long as you have released an album, you have passed the Next Rated Category.
HIP HOP WORLD REVELATION OF THE YEAR
Another category is Hip Hop World Revelation of the Year, this category simply means, Best New Artiste meaning, you must have released your debut album in the year in review. Even if you have spent 10 years in the music industry and might as well released 18-20 singles; as long as you haven’t released an album, you are not eligible to be nominated in the Revelation Of The Year category. Until you release your first album you are then considered a new artiste in the year under review.
BEST POP SINGLE/ BEST R&B SINGLE
Your song will not be nominated in the singles category be it Best Pop Single or Best R&B single category if the song wasn’t officially released as a single. This means, even if you release an album and a single off that album becomes popular, it won’t still be nominated as a single because it wasn’t released as a single.
There are songs that came out a year ago and was fairly popular, these songs wasn’t released in the year in review but the videos were released in the year in review. This means it’s only the video released in the year in review that gets nominated for a video category. Unfortunately, most people get to know about a song when the video is released so they conclude that the song should be nominated for a category. If the video of a song is not released in the year under review, it will not be nominated for any category.
These are some of the things people don’t understand. Another important thing is that you even if had 5 nominations with a song doesn’t mean that your song is The Recording of the Year. There are so many technicalities of selecting songs in the Recording Of The Year they vary from composure, lyrics, production value, delivery and popularity.
